Sony: popular PSP Minis games could end up on UMD, PS3

As part of their initiative to entice developers for their PSP Minis service (and probably to remind gamers that they haven't forgotten about UMD yet), Sony has hinted at the prospect of Minis eventually being released on the PSP's proprietary UMD format. Not only that, thse bite-sized games could also end up making the jump to the PS3.

Sony Europe s Zeno Colaco recently told Develop that it's possible that the most popular Minis titles could end up in a collected UMD release in the future:

I think that a package of multiple Minis games on a single UMD is a real possibility at a later stage, where even a studio or publisher will put a collection of their own games on a single disc. We d be open to that.

Colaco conceded that the download-only Minis wouldn't necessarily make a killing in retail, but the chance to penetrate another revenue stream could prove to be an enticing opportunity for developers. Sony is also not ruling out eventual releases on other platforms such as the PS3:

These games won t need to necessarily be built for the home console, and I think these games will find their true life and identity in those micro-bursts of play. But I do think there s a possibility that Minis could find themselves on other consoles down the line.

Sony's PSP Minis service is due to launch along with the PSP Go on October 1. So far, 15 titles have been confirmed to be available at launch. All of these will be playable on all PSP models.
