UPDATE Brett Favre to score Madden NFL 09 cover

Word has it that Electronic Arts may have made an interesting pick for this season's Madden.

According to GameDaily, EA will soon announce the retired veteran Brett Favre as cover athlete for Madden NFL 09 (Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3, PSP, Nintendo Wii, DS).

It hasn't been long since Favre's retirement earlier this year, so it won't be surprising if EA considered Favre's performance in 2007 before choosing him. Some believe that putting the three-time AP MVP quarterback from the Green Bay Packers on Madden NFL 09's cover could easily be a deliberate decision to celebrate the series' 20th year anniversary.

Whether or not Favre will actually be the star is still unclear, but we can at least be certain the Madden curse won't strike. Unless of course, Favre makes a surprising comeback this season. For now, we can just count on the upcoming announcement of Madden NFL 09's cover.

UPDATE: We just got informed that the above rumored has been confirmed by no other than EA's Peter Moore. Here's an excerpt found on his official blog over at EA's website:

It is with great pride that we take the bold step of featuring a retired player on the front of packaging, an honor normally reserved for a player at the peak of his game.

I say with great pride, because some may question the marketing strategy behind this (and many at EA did just that, quite frankly). I don't for one minute.
